An illustration that I have made regarding the exposure of children living in volcanically active areas to gaseous elemental mercury (GEM or Hg0). Exposure to Hg0 leads to the accumulation of mercury (Hg) – a toxic heavy metal – in various tissues of the body. The level of exposure can be assessed by analyzing the amount of Hg in hair samples.
